A Lawyer in Paradise

This book is dedicated to my fellow travellers: my wife Lee, and my children Ben, Kimi and Sam, and also to the Samoan people who so enriched two years of my life.

Although I refer to a number of trials in which I appeared, this is not a comparative analysis of the legal systems of Australia and Western Samoa; rather, those trials have been included for their human, as distinct from their forensic, interest only.

Nor have I set out to examine in minute detail the broad sweep of Samoan life or to venture into the Margaret Mead/Derek Freeman debate.

Instead I have simply recorded some of the adventures and misadventures of expatriate life. The passage of time and the vagaries of memory since I left Samoa some 32 years ago have, I am sure, softened the rough edges of some experiences and otherwise impaired my recollections but if some memories may have been enhanced a little, or some names now escape me, I hope that is of little significance.

About the Author

A Lawyer in Paradise proves that Robert Anderson is an adept author – its epilogue, a poignant poem, is written by Rob. Also an accomplished artist, one of Rob’s paintings features on the cover.

Happy in the Service

Born in 1894 in London, mother dying when he was only 11 years old, Percy set sail to Adelaide on his own at 16 years – the start of many adventures including serving in both world wars. Percy put his age up to enlist in WWI and down to enlist in WWII.

Percy provides his unique personal experiences in hand written diaries he kept throughout his service, and describes the highs and lows of being away from the comforts of home while facing the horrors and carnage of battle at close quarters and the bombings and shellings from afar, together with the mateship and camaraderie between the courageous men and women thrust into such conditions.

Here is my story … I hope you enjoy my journey

About the Editor

From sitting on his knee as a young boy listening to his stories of his early childhood and war experiences to chatting with him well into his nineties as he recalled various life experiences and elaborated on the words he had written in pencil or pen and ink in his fragile memo books, it was difficult not to be mesmerised by his adventures and his compassion and love for his fellow man despite his exposure twice to the horrors of war, testament to his faith and devotion to his God.

Owning My Crazy

Most of us are just trying to get through the day, but paramedics are often extremely harsh on themselves. We have high expectations and feel a pressure to have all the answers. Add to this the training we receive from day one, to respond quickly, to be ever-vigilant, to ‘switch on’ without notice, and then make difficult logistical and clinical decisions, for an organisation that doesn’t seem to care for the carers when they fall, and we are all a recipe for disaster. Paramedics, firies and police have front row seats to the greatest shit show on earth. The question is not ‘why’ we break; it’s why it sometimes takes so long…

From high functioning, multi-tasking, goat-owning paramedic, to broken, blubbering mess on the side of the road, Kim’s journey through PTSD, anxiety and depression after 20 years as a paramedic has more ups and downs than a toilet seat.

This book is edited, conceived and distributed by affiliate publisher Tightrope Publishing.

About the Author

Born out of personal experience and the need for catharsis, Kim’s first title tells one Paramedic’s story of their journey through PTSD. The decision to publish was based on the desire to reach out to others who may be in similar circumstances and struggling or feeling alone. The current system dealing with the mental health issues related to emergency service workers is lacking, and if no one speaks up, things will not change.

A Wrestling Memoir

Pulling no punches. Setting the record straight on Australian wrestling culture in the 2010’s.

Matthew Borg’s wrestling career began in 2011 and ended in 2015. This memoir is a rundown of Borg’s time in the so-called “fake” sport of professional wrestling: the good, the bad and everything else in between.

This leaves one to ponder … is the world of professional wrestling really what it seems?

One night, specifically that of July 31, 2013, I was home alone in the lounge room watching Channel 7’s AFL documentary The Inside Man. A 60 Minutes style expose on the now infamous Essendon drug scandal wherein Luke Darcy sat down with former Essendon strength and conditioning coach Dean Robinson in an exclusive one-on-one interview. Robinson unflinchingly dished the dirt on what happened behind closed doors and the longer the interview went on, the more I could empathise with his firmly held beliefs in his pursuit for natural justice and by the end, I had no reason whatsoever to doubt his version of events.

I did not know it on the first occasion I watched in 2013, but it was to be this hour and a half of gripping television that when watched again later, would provide the impetus for what is to follow.

To be crystal clear, what you will not be reading is an in-depth look at my entire life – that is another story to be told later down the line. What you will be reading instead is an entire rundown of my time in the so-called “fake” sport of professional wrestling.

Celebrating 78 Years of Manufacturing

This book is dedicated in appreciation to everyone who has ever worked at Toyoda Gosei Australia, Bridgestone Australia, Uniroyal and SA Rubber Mills. It contains images and information on these organisations between 1939 and 2017.

In 1939 Mark R. Lodge and Harold D.Hill purchased a small rubber manufacturing business from Kenny Charlesworth Rubber Pty Ltd located in a small building on the corner of Furness Avenue and South Road at Edwardstown in South Australia. Edwardstown was a lightly developed suburb 8kms from the city centre on route to the rich agricultural regions south of the city.

This purchase was the beginning of an empire that would span over 80 years.

Being Sam opens a different window on the world. It may make you smile, it may make you cry …

Being Sam is memoir of life and death, rascal chromosomes and rogue cancer cells, and a lot of love in between, written by Sam’s mother, Morag Zwartz.

Diagnosed with leukaemia at two, Sam astonished his medical team by surviving so many relapses before the disease took its toll.

About the Author

Morag Zwartz began as a journalist in New Zealand, at The Press, Christchurch, where she was able to pursue an interest in investigating stories behind the scenes.

Later, in Australia, she wrote The New Age Gospel: Christ or Counterfeit? – a detailed investigation of the New Age movement in all its forms (1987). Two exposes of religious cults followed: Fractured Families (2004) and Apostles of Fear (2008).
