Baton of Courage

All profits go to the Eye Surgeon’s Foundation

GORDON HUGHES, A BLIND VIOLINIST, LOSES HIS SIGHT IN HIS MID TEENS DUE TO A TRAGIC ACCIDENT.

Born in Moonta in 1896 to a family of fishermen, Gordon shows an early talent for music, playing both the violin and pedal-organ with an ambition to become an orchestral conductor, contrary to his father’s wishes.

After his loss of sight Gordon experiences disappointment, hardship, romance and eventually gains successes and wisdom from the multiple characters he meets and works with along the way.

Gordon spends his earlier teenage years as a student attending the ‘The School for the Blind, Deaf and Dumb’ founded in 1874 at Brighton, South Australia, and later to be known as Townsend House, before then attending the ‘Blind School’ at North Adelaide where he learns basket weaving, the usual occupation for the unsighted in those times.

On leaving boarding school, Gordon has to now face the hardships of not only being unsighted, but of finding suitable accommodation and fending for himself in a sometimes harsh world.

StupIT People

StupIT People is a tongue in cheek exposé of the world of modern big technology business. It’s a world where corporate madness and self-interest rules. One in which clients and employees simply don’t matter, as senior executives (aka company psychopaths) pursue short-term personal profit and internal point-scoring at absolutely any cost.

The story revolves around Michael Mansfield, a loyal and hard-working IT Sales Executive who strives to do the right thing by his company. For Michael, saving stupid people from themselves, navigating the constant back-stabbing within the business, and dealing with corporate political correctness gone mad has become a way of life.

This light-hearted tale of redemption will resonate with anyone who has experienced the sheer head-scratching absurdity that often exists within the modern business bubble.

About the Author

Born and raised in Adelaide, Steve Eatts worked in the field of Information Technology for more than 30 years, in many different roles across both public and private sector organisations. Throughout his career his work has taken him on business assignments in the United Kingdom, USA, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines and across all states of Australia.

After a hectic career involving far too much time away from family and friends, Steve decided to step off the corporate treadmill of IT and big business to pursue some other interests including writing his debut novel.  He now describes himself as semi-retired, and is a widower who lives in South Australia with his two sons.

Bullied to Broken

This is Maddy’s story.

Much of her story is from her text messages and accounts to those she was close to. I am proud to be my daughter’s voice. This book has also become my story. Maddy, suffered bullying from a young age. This caused her severe mental health trauma and left her with self-esteem issues, panic attacks and anxiety. On 24 June 2018 Maddy took her own life, aged 23 years.

This book is intended to advocate for mental health awareness. Maddy lived in fear for much of her young adult life. Maddy had a high drive for perfectionism. Maddy was afraid to let people know of her mental health issues as she feared judgment by others. Maddy’s story will give an insight into how bullying effects the individual, the long lasting psychological trauma that it can cause. It is hoped that people who choose to bully can find empathy to cease the behaviour. It discusses strategies to cope with bullying, how to build resilience and ways to heal pain and grief.

Bullying is becoming an epidemic. Children are bullying in the school yard, and then through cyberbullying. There is bullying in workplaces and sporting organisations. There is often no respite for those being bullied. Many of those who are bullied have chronic mental health issues, increased risks of suicide, there is more burden on the health care system and exorbitant costs to the government, the cycle goes around and around. Writing this book has been a difficult personal journey. I hope that Maddy’s story will help others, then the journey would have been worth it.
