Against The Tide

Pride in their new country, hard work, entrepreneurship, love affairs and heartbreak are part of the story of four young women and their lives in colonial New South Wales.

Against the Tide is a true story of the three wives and sister of an educated convict, Thomas Armitage Salmon who arrived in Sydney in 1831 on the York. For his white collar crime, he served seven years as a clerk to the Superintendent of Stores at Emu Plains.

Thomas’s beautiful young wife Sarah and their four young children, accompanied by his devoted sister Mary Ann, followed on the Princess Victoria arriving in Sydney in 1834. After a year the enterprising Sarah opened the successful Rose Inn on the Western Highway in Penrith.

The vehement politics of the day were chronicled by another wife. She was Ann the widow of Robert Howe, of the Howe family newspaper dynasty. Her paper, The Sydney Gazette supported the liberal Governor Richard Bourke and her stand, and that of her lover, William Watt, saw many enemies made among the elites. Ann’s enterprising spirit saw her as one of the first settlers on the newly explored Macleay River.

This book follows the lives of these interesting women interwoven with the growth of the colony. It details the changes to self government and the law, the end of transportation, opening of large tracts of agricultural land serviced by road, rail and sea travel, public schooling, the arts and leisure.

Healing Depression

As the author of Whispers from the Angels I am pleased to say that I have been guided to write another healing book.

My journey through depression lasted many years and at times it was for me life threatening.  I know now that I have been one of the luckier ones to have come out of it on the other side by learning how to recognise and use my Life Tools.

Healing Depression Using Life Tools is a book that has at times been channelled to me from a much Higher Power and it has been written with great passion to show people that in time you can recover from an illness such as depression.

About the Author

The discovery of being able to learn to identify and access my own Life Tools to assist me through my journey of depression has been a truly enlightening experience as it has taken me from the darkness into the light.

We all have Life Tools, they are deeply entrenched within all of us and if we are able to recognise them and use them in a positive way they really can help us through all of those tough times in life.

A great deal of uncovered wisdom through my journey has taught me that we can empower ourselves back to a much happier and healthier way of life if only we would take the time to educate ourselves and learn to be more in tune with what our bodies are really saying to us in times of great stress.

The journey that I went through has taught me a great deal about myself, I would not trade what I went through now for anything in the world for it has taught me that no matter how deep the hurt in life there is always hope.  We do not need to travel through these really tough times alone.  There are always people out there who can assist us to manage our illness in a more positive way if only we will let them.

Faith, hope, and an innate belief in ourselves are powerful Life Tools and they play a major role in allowing us through time to become better.

Positive change will always promote positive growth and you can achieve wellness by accessing your Life Tools.  Empower yourself to a much more balanced way of life by learning that it is okay to love yourself.  Learn to value your life in a way that you have never done so before.

Never ever give up on hope!

Choosing and Bringing Up

Your Puppy

In this witty no-nonsense guide to puppy selection and training, veteran dog trainer Peter Franks, gives the facts, poses relevant questions to the reader  and provides instruction on how to train a new puppy so that she or he matures into a well mannered, loving and responsive member of the family.

There are many photographs, sketches, cartoons and True Stories to help illustrate what Peter has to say.

Peter gives advice on:

  • how to identify the dog breed which best suits you and/or your family
  • where you can look for a puppy
  • what you need to get for and how to prepare your home for the new family member.
  • toilet training
  • consecutive training instructions – the sit, stand, down, recall, the stay,  walking and place up (heel).
  • There is a chapter on rescue dogs, another on what Peter calls the fear factor and yet another on how to deal with common behaviour problems such as separation anxiety and dominance.

In the Appendix there is information on Obedience Competitions. Peter uses the Companion Dog – Novice Class Competition as an example to:

  • state the Australian National Kennel Council Rule Book requirements
  • tease out what the rules mean
  • provide training tips for each exercise in the Competition.

About the Authors

Peter would like to thank his wife June for her support, encouragement and advice over the past 55 years. There are several others who have influenced him throughout his competition years, dog training career and Judging role. Pat Baily for her help in training his Golden Retriever Woody for the NSW State Titles Competition (Woody won the Novice Gold Medal). Thanks to George Bartolo for encouraging Peter to become an instructor, to Lucy Ellem who was his mentor and who gave Peter the incentive to join the NSW Canine Council and then to undertake his training to become a Judge. And to Danny and Silvia Wilson of BarkBusters™ for their encouragement over the years.

A special acknowledgement must go to Dog behaviourist John Fisher (author of “Think Dog”) who completely changed Peter’s approach to dog training from negative training where harsh words and actions are used, to positive training in which dogs are rewarded for trying and/ or doing something correctly. Beverly would like to thank her husband Daniel for his encouragement to get a dog; a dog who has improved their lives in so many ways.

Peter and Beverly would also like to express their gratitude to Kyle and Erin Charnock for allowing them onto their property and Eraky Labradors kennel at his farm in Bargo; to Wendy Donahue of Golden Retriever Rescue Inc for allowing them to use information directly from their website and for information on Roger.

Also thanks to the Committee of the Illawarra Dog Training Club for allowing us to attend a training session and to take photos while there. They really appreciated Noah’s mother Ros Southhall, for giving us Noah’s story and photo. There are many of Peter’s clients who have generously allowed their dogs to become part of this publication. Last but not least, we acknowledge Denis Ivaneza’s photographic expertise (Inner Visions) in getting some tricky shots for us.

The User’s Manual For Your Body

  • HOW THE BODY HANDLES THE FOOD WE EAT
  • WHY WE GET OBESITY AND BECOME SICK
  • HOW TO CURE IT AND STAY HEALTHY

Your body is the most sophisticated thing in the Universe, and you should view it as your most treasured possession. But you did not arrive in this world with a user’s manual that tells you how your body works, particularly in relation to the food you put into it, and what goes wrong when you do things differently to how you have evolved.

Two thirds of western society are either overweight or suffering from obesity. This a potent source of unhappiness, extending in many to anxiety, stress and clinical depression. But there’s also a significantly increased risk of serious diseases such as cancer, heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis and diabetes. If you contract any of these there’s a very good chance you will die prematurely.

Statistics show that what we are currently doing is clearly not working. And that’s because people simply don’t know or have been given the wrong information. The User’s Manual For Your Body provides in simple terms everything you need to know.

The Threads of Retribution

After almost four decades, Amelia Grover receives the answer to a question she asked during her childhood; she does not remember it. It is a fulfilment of a promise made by Agrippina. Amelia must cross a series of thresholds. Dimensions bring predestination that Amelia must assume, forcing her to lose something precious.

Through Agrippina’s letter and Amelia’s tapestry, her memory tells this saga; about a house built on a white rock; first counting the sadness and happiness of the five generations that came to live in the house. Hidden are the reasons; a Mother and son must be born. They will be the descendants of a family chosen by destiny. Alondra and Kaspar Sabacio will arrive in this world with a predetermined and precise aim; to remove from the planet, its most severe scourge, religion.

That will not happen before the pieces of a message, lost during the long history of humanity, can go back to the human eyes, and thus be able to redeem the world.

Kaspar Sabacio will live a single life to the end. Throughout his journey, Kaspar wishes to be more human. Within him rages a constant battle between his human form, real essence, and purpose, especially his mother’s design. He questions his humanity and wishes to experiment with all human emotions.

This book brings reincarnations from the present, taking them to an unsuspected future. They are past living, and with them, they bring their guilt, liberation, becoming and the actions of all. The time of this story is indefinite.
