Adventures Through Covid

THE ART OF SUBCONCIOUS TRAVEL IN A TRANSCENDENTAL STATE

Parris Fotias has just flown home from a work trip through India. Eleven days later, COVID-19 is officially declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation. Soon after, the Australian Government closes its international border under Biosecurity Act 2015, essentially banning all Australians from travelling overseas.

Adventures Through COVID is a story of survival, reinvention and self-reflection. It is a personal odyssey that chronicles the frustrations of living through a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic.

From the Author

The irony is, I have always wanted to publish a book, yet on this occasion, it was never my motivation.

Returning to Australia from India on February 29th, 2020, little did I realise that this would be (as of writing) my last trip abroad.

Throughout the month of March, as the severity of COVID-19 began to sink in, I felt compelled to reach out to as many of our clients and partners as possible, just to check in on their wellbeing.

So I started emailing them and by April 08th, 2020, these had somehow morphed into the Dear Diary series that you see today.

I initially had concerns that I would simply be an unwelcomed addition to their Inbox but was genuinely overwhelmed by the number of phone calls, emails and messages I received in reply.

Some just wanted to chat, some shared with me their own stories, while others just wanted to thank me for reaching out.

Yet I should have been thanking them, for their inspiration allowed me to relive adventures I had not thought about for years.

Travel is indeed a privilege and one that should never be taken for granted.

W.E. West : Recollections of a Life in Early Orange

This book is an autobiography but more importantly it is a Social History of the Orange district in the words of one of its residents.

Willie Edwin West (1886-1974) was a well-known resident of Orange during its formative years and was a Canobolas orchardist. Two of his many skills were as a horseman in his younger years and a raconteur in his later years. In the mid-1960s he sat down and recorded reminisces of his life. The tapes laid idle for 55 years and have now been brought back to life. Did all the events recorded take place? Probably! Did all of the conversations take place as recorded? All most certainly not!

W E West had five sons and one daughter: Jim, Russell, Bruce, Brian, Howard and Winifred. As his recollections focused on his adventures there have been two important additions in this book. Firstly, two documents prepared by Winifred in 1999 have been included. There is a brief outline of the family and her recollections of family life in Orange until her marriage in 1945.

The book concludes with an Honour Roll as each of his sons served in various capacities during World War II. Russell and Brian both paid the supreme sacrifice. This section includes details of their war service and a brief history of the units in which they all served.

Harmonisation of Anti-Fake News Legislation in ASEAN

Computer & Internet Law

This book tackles one of the scourges of our digital society, typically termed ‘fake news’, where false information is disseminated widely, often to promote extreme ideology or particular political views. Dr Smith picks apart the legal mechanisms used in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) that addresses fake news. Following discussions of the nature of fake news, the author provides a framework to assess the effectiveness of fake news in light of the legislation and its use in Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, and proposes a model law for ASEAN to provide a balance in maintaining values of free speech whilst addressing the promulgation of untruths. This work provides useful insights into the nature of fake news and how nations can start to address an issue that will grow in impact in the coming years, whether in major Western jurisdictions or small regional groups. The observations and analysis in this book, and the understanding of the impact on society of misinformation, will give all readers pause for thought, and insight into a serious issue for today.

Twenty Voices of 2020

In early 2020, life as we knew it changed.

In Twenty Voices of 2020, Jo Fuller takes us to one small corner of the world to see the human impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, sharing the stories of 20 people in her community in Melbourne, Australia, but in their words – the school principal, the policeman, the pilot, the nine-year-old school girl, the doctor who lives up the road.

Their stories tell of real events, real emotions, and they also tell of a greater shared story; that in forcing us to experience some things differently, 2020 offered us the chance to experience something more. Our gratitude for the small things, for the simple things, for the previously underappreciated and even unseen things deepened. Our sense of community evolved too, becoming stronger than many of us had ever known.

Like a thread, the stories of the 20 voices weave through our common experience of navigating a year that changed the world and in so doing, they ultimately stitch us together upon a fabric that is so much greater than ourselves alone.
