Something horrid happened in the city of Douma in Syria on 7 April 2018. It was alleged to be an attack with banned chemical weapons, said to have killed more than forty terrifi ed civilians. The US, UK and France responded with punitive missiles and airstrikes.

But what did actually happen? And how does this relate to the other alleged chemical attacks by the Syrian regime?

Inspector A takes us on a journey through his investigations and travels in Syria during the conflict, and the political intrigue that has
caused bitter divisions among Member States at the UN and the OPCW, the world’s chemical weapons watchdog.

About the Author

 

Inspector A joined the UN-affiliated Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in the first group of inspectors in 1997.

A chemical engineer with military experience, he soon became a foremost Inspection Team Leader conducting inspections around the world. He left in 2005 to continue a career in the chemical industry.

He joined the OPCW again in 2016 as part of the “rehire” scheme, aimed at bringing back experienced inspectors. He soon saw signs of the Syrian chemical weapons narrative being politicised. Inspectors started objecting but got nowhere.

Along with his UN passport, Inspector A has cheerfully carried British, South African and Australian passports. He wishes people would be honest and do the right thing, even in geopolitics. He knows this is naïve, nonetheless tried in two UN Security Council meetings to get his story across. He failed, gave up and wrote this book.

About the Author

 

Dr. Rajmohan Ramanathapillai is a native of Sri Lanka who grew up through civil unrest to become a human rights advocate, poet, and photographer.

With a master’s in Religious Studies and a PhD in Philosophy from McMaster University, Canada, Dr. Rajmohan taught philosophy,
peace, and human rights across the world. He has successfully directed programs aimed to promote peace, including the “Culture of Peace” program for the children of Tamil refugees and the Tamil Diaspora community in Toronto, and the “Kindness is Contagious” program for African American children.

Since moving to Australia, Dr. Rajmohan has completed a master’s in counseling from Monash University and worked as a trauma counselor, providing trauma therapy for torture and trauma survivors of asylum seekers and refugees around the world. Now, he serves as a Family Violence Therapeutic specialist supporting women and children.

Dr. Rajmohan hopes that his poetry collection, Turtles Without a Sandy Beach, will educate and inspire us all on matters of human rights and survival.

A Note From The Publisher

GRETA LILY FINN, affectionately known as Lil and orphaned at the tender age of six, was a compassionate, open-minded, resourceful and talented woman. Raised by her grandmother in Orange, NSW, Lil possessed the gift of storytelling, something inherited from her estranged father.
Lil had seven children, who filled her heart with love and purpose, but only after they left home did she turn her hand to writing, and the idea of the ‘Freddie Story’ was born.
 
Lil’s children, including my mother, knew about the ‘Freddie Story’, but surprisingly none of them felt inclined to read it.
During the Covid lockdown of 2020, I decided to transcribe her elegantly handwritten pages to give them the new life that they deserved. I was determined to share it with you all.
 
I want to acknowledge my Aunty Jenny, who lovingly preserved the manuscript and introduced me to the treasures it held within. I am forever grateful for her ongoing support, kindness and unwavering love throughout this journey.
 
My deepest appreciation to my cousin Ian Brown, my advisor, editor and biggest supporter since the idea first came to light.
