Sri Lanka

Hidden Gems And More

Sri Lanka, a magical island not far from the southern tip of India has enchanted travellers and merchants since ancient times. Marco Polo the 13th century Venetian explorer described the country then known as Ceylon as being of the highest quality and most pleasing island in the world. Sri Lanka has had its share of travails over the years. A 26 year civil war which finally ended in 2009 with the defeat of the ‘Tamil Tiger’ rebels, a devastating tsunami on boxing day 2004, two armed insurrections and a governance system since independence from the British Empire in 1948 that has not been able to extract the true potential of the land and its resourceful people. The country lacks economic development, a 21st century infrastructure, adequate foreign currency reserves and a comfortable standard of living for a majority of its citizens. Poverty is widespread and growing. Sri Lanka needs to attract investment, both foreign and local. Tourism is one way forward due to the island’s beauty, wildlife and culture.

My book is intended to pique the curiosity of modern-day travellers who would enjoy the many aspects of this diverse and interesting island nation which has so much to offer. Tourists can enjoy the many attractions and historic wonders of this resplendent isle, delve into its culture and ancient past and savour the nostalgia of Sri Lanka’s tea industry and lifestyle of the planters in an era gone by. The people of this enchanting yet troubled island deserve the prosperity and happiness which has eluded them so far.

Footloose & Fancy Free

Africa by Thumb 1968

This is a unique story about the perils and pleasures of two women travelling in North and East Africa last century, which would not be possible to repeat today.

In February 1968, Anna and her friend Prue set out to hitchhike from Casablanca to Cairo, 4,500 kms. Without benefit of the Internet, mobile phones, credit cards, ATMs, Lonely Planet guides or digital cameras, they bought a Map of Africa showing the major towns and roads and managed to navigate their way, not only across North Africa but down into East Africa and back up to the Mediterranean, a total of over 24,000 kms, by road, train, and paddle steamer but mostly by thumb.

Taking 9 months these very naïve and foolhardy Australian girls survived and loved the adventure, knowing nothing about the countries they were visiting which had just shaken off colonial shackles and were rarely visited by tourists. The girls had to wear djellabas much of the time to avoid the pokes, prods and provocation of the local men who were completely bewildered by their presence, as was everyone else they met on the way.

They escaped dangerous confrontations on lonely and isolated roads, survived a nasty car accident in Ethiopia, were stranded in the Nubian desert in 50°C and chased by wild elephants in Uganda but despite being vulnerable women in a predominately men’s world, they were also overwhelmed by the kindness and respect shown them by complete strangers who protected and cared for them along the way.

Proof of Life

The story of how an anxious country boy found out about the world and how to make a difference in it

A student elective in the New Guinea Highlands in the mid-1970s lit a fire in Nick Williams’ belly that determined his medical career. Proof of Life tells the extraordinary story of Nick’s journey through Southern Africa during the apartheid era and the emergence of AIDS and his years as a District Medical Officer in central Australia.

A young Dr Nick learned all he knew from nurses and community health workers under kerosene lamps in remote PNG and rural Africa. He embraced the ‘see one, do one, teach one’ method and discovered, with the help of brilliant nurses during a 58-person truck rollover, just how far that mantra can stretch.

Compelling and heart-warming stories unfold throughout this memoir. It’s a story of adventure, challenge, love, and confronting the best and the worst of people when providing medical care in the developing world.

In Australia, Nick’s career is enriched by working with the world’s oldest living culture in the Northern Territory, where he continues to live his passion for working in true collaboration with nurses and health workers.

During an ICRC mission in northern Pakistan, Nick confronted a world in which he could not make any difference. Polarised by feelings of frustration and terror he realised that true value is not always in outcomes but in the journey itself.

Proof of Life is a captivating story of one doctor’s journey, shaped by the places he worked, the people he met, and the risks he took to pursue something greater. Joy, excitement, terror, and fulfilment in giving it all.

Tourism in Bali in the 70s was in its infancy as was Albert Driver’s employment as a tour leader.

After a confidence boost stemming from his time with lovely Bethleen Steele, and the help of Sudi (his beautiful Balinese assistant), Albert led a motley group of Australian salesman on a life-changing tour.

A beautiful but mysterious island, the group had to overcome disease, unhappy deities and bursts of undisciplined behaviour from some members to finish the tour.

About the Author

Bill Taylor has lived most of his life in South Australia, either in Adelaide or on Kangaroo Island. He has also spent extended times away from Australia, including in France, where this tale was first written, and in Indonesia, particularly Bali, the location of most of the action.

He first went to Bali when tourists were a novelty and children would line up to cheer motor cyclists passing through their village. Certainly not the case now. He practised as a lawyer for much of his adult life and is now retired.

He has been married for more than fifty years to Caroline, who surely must be a saint. They have two adult children and five grandchildren.
