A Deeper Beauty

Obsessed by the human form, Bill Cook bucked the 1970s trend of abstract art, focusing instead on figurative painting and drawing during his art studies at the prestigious South Australian School of Art in North Adelaide. In addition to his paintings and drawings, he was soon producing political cartoons, caricatures and illustrations for a range of publications.

Over a career spanning five decades, he has produced a substantial oeuvre in a range of media and styles, most recently ceramic sculptures that combine ‘the complexity of his painterly works with a multi-angled human ceramic canvas’, and works that reference the ‘exile, longing and marginalisation’ of migration.

About the Author

Lynnette Sim is the author of children’s picture book, ‘Blue the Balloon Bumps into Sydney’. She writes for the very young children with the focus of introducing them to the beauty of words, places, and people. Her writing style is simple, fun, and positive.

The love for children picture books began since Lynnette’s parents introduced picture books into her life. Those picture books led her to appreciate the beauty of words and the craft of storytelling. Naturally, she loves to read and tell stories. However, writing picture books is a journey that she does not envisage.

During her travels with her son, she is always on the lookout for picture books that she can bring home, to relish the memories of places that they have explored. She found some stunning picture books in Europe which inspired her to create a picture book for her home city, Sydney.

Lynnette undertook studies in the art of story writing and completed a picture book writing course with the Australian Writers Centre. Her debut picture book, ‘Blue the Balloon Bumps into Sydney’ is her way of storytelling that culminates her love for beauty found in words, places, and people.

Lynnette lives in the scenic harbour city of Sydney, Australia, with her husband and son.

Annabel’s Mum

Based on the real journey of a young mother diagnosed with cancer during the pregnancy of her second child. This story highlights the feelings of change and uncertainty from the perspective of Annabel – just a toddler at the time of her Mum’s diagnosis. However, it also celebrates the excitement and gift of new life and pays homage to memories of the people we love.

This book may help a child to understand that although many changes occur when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, the child is still important; the child remains safe, loved, and will forever be connected to their loved one.

Annabel’s Mum is aimed at families with young children, aged 2-8, but can be enjoyed and appreciated by all ages. It is an excellent resource for primary schools to use in social and emotional wellbeing programs such as ‘Seasons for Growth‘ (by Good Grief) as children explore the topics of change, loss, and grief.

GORDON HUGHES, A BLIND VIOLINIST, LOSES HIS SIGHT IN HIS MID TEENS DUE TO A TRAGIC ACCIDENT.

Born in Moonta in 1896 to a family of fishermen, Gordon shows an early talent for music, playing both the violin and pedal-organ with an ambition to become an orchestral conductor, contrary to his father’s wishes.

After his loss of sight Gordon experiences disappointment, hardship, romance and eventually gains successes and wisdom from the multiple characters he meets and works with along the way.

Gordon spends his earlier teenage years as a student attending the ‘The School for the Blind, Deaf and Dumb’ founded in 1874 at Brighton, South Australia, and later to be known as Townsend House, before then attending the ‘Blind School’ at North Adelaide where he learns basket weaving, the usual occupation for the unsighted in those times.

On leaving boarding school, Gordon has to now face the hardships of not only being unsighted, but of finding suitable accommodation and fending for himself in a sometimes harsh world.
