Footloose & Fancy Free

Africa by Thumb 1968

This is a unique story about the perils and pleasures of two women travelling in North and East Africa last century, which would not be possible to repeat today.

In February 1968, Anna and her friend Prue set out to hitchhike from Casablanca to Cairo, 4,500 kms. Without benefit of the Internet, mobile phones, credit cards, ATMs, Lonely Planet guides or digital cameras, they bought a Map of Africa showing the major towns and roads and managed to navigate their way, not only across North Africa but down into East Africa and back up to the Mediterranean, a total of over 24,000 kms, by road, train, and paddle steamer but mostly by thumb.

Taking 9 months these very naïve and foolhardy Australian girls survived and loved the adventure, knowing nothing about the countries they were visiting which had just shaken off colonial shackles and were rarely visited by tourists. The girls had to wear djellabas much of the time to avoid the pokes, prods and provocation of the local men who were completely bewildered by their presence, as was everyone else they met on the way.

They escaped dangerous confrontations on lonely and isolated roads, survived a nasty car accident in Ethiopia, were stranded in the Nubian desert in 50°C and chased by wild elephants in Uganda but despite being vulnerable women in a predominately men’s world, they were also overwhelmed by the kindness and respect shown them by complete strangers who protected and cared for them along the way.

About the Author

RHEMA GORUCK, A PROPHETIC EVANGELIST writer, and spiritual guide with a deep commitment to exploring the transformative power of the Word. Born in a Hindu background, in Mauritius, a developing country in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Rhema began hearing the voice of the Lord at a very young age. She understood this divine presence as a close friend who guided her in prayer, particularly in interceding for others. She came to know the Lord personally at the age of 32, deepening her spiritual journey as she studied the Bible under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In 2009, following a divine calling inspired by Genesis 12, Rhema moved to Melbourne, Australia. There, she pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Ministry at Harvest Bible College and furthered her studies at Bethel School of Faith and Spiritual Ministry, where she cultivated her prophetic and spiritual gifts.

Her faith journey continued at Upper Room Church in Lara Vic, where she participated in prophetic workshops that deepened her understanding and practice ministry. In 2022, Rhema was commissioned and ordained as a prophetic evangelist by
the Lord God in the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Rhema writes in the prophetic as the Lord guides her, with each word divinely inspired and directed by God. In “Spoken Word” she explores the power of words in shaping lives, offering readers a guide to harnessing this power in their daily lives. Whether addressing the significance of naming, the dynamics of blessing and cursing, or the role of worship as a lifestyle, her approach is accessible and deeply insightful.

Rhema resides in Melbourne, Australia, where she continues to write, teach, counsel and minister to those seeking deeper spiritual understanding and personal transformation.

Found Between Cultures

As a child, Mila and her brothers were taken, under a cloud of secrecy, by their parents from their home, school, extended family, country and culture. They were not allowed by their parents to talk about their forthcoming journey. When either parent made an order, the children obeyed. This order not to speak drew eight-year old Mila to pay special attention to her life.

This is a story with an interesting scope. It is about escape from oppression, about family, and about her various journeys through different cultures. Mila writes about her adjusting to the challenge of a new culture, home and language in Australia. She highlights the different ways that members of her family respond to this same challenge.

At the heart of this book is Mila’s understanding of our obligation to stay true to ourselves that reveal to us who we are, unrelated to our family or culture. Through the gift of her story, she is also celebrating the common humanity that binds us all, no matter where we come from.
