Whose Life is it Anyway?

Leaving a Violent Abuser

Deborah left Wayne after eighteen years of his violence, taking their children with her.

She thought they were now free from abuse. Not so. This is the sequel to Whose Life Is It Anyway? Recognising and Surviving Domestic Violence.

Deborah looks closely at the pitfalls of Family Law court as experienced by an abused parent, while attempting to keep her children safe from harm.

It is a story that will resonate with every parent engaging in a fight for the rights of children.

Does the Family court act ‘in the best interests’ of the child? You be the judge.

Deborah Thomson, self-published author of Whose Life is it Anyway? Leaving a Violent Abuser

About the Author

Deborah Thomson, with her daughter, moved to Tasmania in 2010. She now lives here with her partner of nine years and a parrot.

Deborah escaped domestic violence and, inspired by her now partner, she wrote her first book Whose Life Is It Anyway? Recognising and Surviving Domestic Violence to help others recognise abuse (in particular coercive control) in the home and to increase their motivation to leave earlier.

After publishing her first book, Deborah became a trained advocate through Engender Equality, for survivors of family violence. As part of the advocacy, she speaks at domestic violence events across Tasmania, through media channels and podcasts. Link to an example of her advocacy work Choking, non-fatal strangulation to become standalone offence in Tasmania under planned law – ABC News

Deborah has recently completed her second book, a follow up to the first which detailed lived experience with domestic violence by her then-husband; spanning seventeen years from 1985 to 2003. This book is now used in Tasmania as an information resource for family violence counsellors and students on practicals.

The new book, soon to be published, is the final chapter in Deborah’s life with a perpetrator of family violence. Whose Life Is It Anyway? Leaving a Violent Abuser is a complex yet engaging depiction of her personal journey as a parent in a custodial battle with an abusive husband, and father of their children.  It is a story that will resonate with every parent engaging in a fight for the rights of children to feel safe and free from harm…

In her spare time, Deborah writes regularly for Forty South magazine, in the column entitled Tasmanian Voices Deborah Thomson The Family Violence Epidemic.

The Originalist

THE NOVEL IS A COVIDCREATIVE PROJECT BY MEMBERS OF THE GILBERT + TOBIN CENTRE OF PUBLIC LAW AT UNSW.

ALL PROCEEDS GO TO UNSW EMERGENCY FUND

VERA JOYCE, brilliant and controversial member of the High battle to the death? Court of Australia is dead – her body found in the shallows of Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin. Was her death simply an accident? A mugging of an early morning jogger gone wrong? Or is there something more sinister behind the tragic death? Detective Gina Hughes, of the Australian Federal Police, has been called in to investigate, and has her suspicions about the family and friends of the late Justice. Vera’s nephew has a longstanding problem with addiction and stands to inherit a great deal upon Vera’s death – but only, he has recently found out, if he follows Vera’s plan to force him to into rehab. Vera’s ex-boyfriend, Gary Lowell, appears to have good reason to be angry: Vera recently broke off their relationship pending a hearing before the Court in which he was due to appear. Constable Rory Lee is less sure about Hughes’ theory: he thinks the Judge’s nephew was already on the way to recovery, and simply cannot believe that a leading Sydney lawyer would murder a member of the High Court. Instead, his suspicions are focused on Gary’s wife, who has become increasingly irate about the affair with Vera and has been threatening her own form of revenge.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE, meanwhile, has her own suspicions: Vera Joyce was one of the most polarizing justices ever to sit on the Court. Her ‘originalist’ ideas about the Constitution provoked enormous opposition as well as admiration in the legal community, and the Chief Justice fears that perhaps one of the other justices may finally have lost their cool – and let legal disagreements spill over into life. If not, she fears that her own oversight of the Court has been too lax – and there has been a serious lapse in Court security. She therefore asks an old friend, retired Chief Justice Milton, to investigate – and to do so fast, before Detective Hughes comes to her own, less salutary conclusions.

‘My father was a policeman – he was shot’
Pebbly Beach remains a timeless place, but it holds a dark secret

The waves lap at the stony shore, seemingly wearing away at a 38-year-old mystery – the death of South Australian police Inspector Geoff Whitford.

Who was this man who headed a highly-secretive organised crime task force? Why did he take his own life on this lonely piece of South Australian coast, leaving suicide notes to be found on October 22, 1981? Why did he leave behind a wife and three daughters?

In these pages, Amanda Schultz, the youngest daughter, sets out on a journey to discover her father, as seen through the eyes of his colleagues and superiors. Her goal was to “meet” her father so she could share her lived experience and support and educate others about suicide awareness.

Amanda, herself a former police officer and now a corporate executive, collaborated on this book with Greg Mayfield, who was a police reporter at The Advertiser at the time of the incident. The pair weave an intriguing story of a career detective who loved life, was slated to be the next Police Commmissioner and whose death has never been fully explained.

It was an era when South Australia was wracked by sensational allegations of corruption against its police force and drug squad. Amanda, who was aged nine years old at the time of her father’s death, travels far and wide to meet the people who knew her father best. Her unrelenting search for answers – and plea for access to secret Coronial files – results in the case being mentioned in State Parliament in Adelaide.

Is the tide of opinion gathered by Amanda enough to break open the official silence on the matter? You be the judge.

‘Amanda discovers her Dad through yarns that are hilarious, absurd, harsh, inspiring and tragic, but always insightful … why did a conscientious and incorruptible detective die?’

Michael O’Connell AM APM, former SA Commissioner for Victims’ Rights

‘A powerful story well told.’

John Silvester, crime reporter and co-author of Underbelly

About the Author

47 year old wife, mum, sister and daughter, Amanda Schultz decides she needs to “meet” her dad 37 years after his alleged suicide, which occurred when she was just 9 years old. Amanda’s goal is to share her story and if she can help just one dad to understand it doesn’t make everything better for those you leave behind then her “lived experience” is positive. Amanda is supported by long time journalist Greg Mayfield who has always had a strong interest in the story of Geoff Whitford and what led to these tragic circumstances throughout the early 1980’s in SA Police.

The Unforeseen Warrior Woman

NOW OUT IN PRINT AND AVAILABLE FOR DISTRIBUTION

If it wasn’t true, one could be forgiven for thinking this book is a work of fiction. The plot is deep and the shocks are even deeper.

It’s a family history and a history of rural New South Wales 70 years after the convicts first arrived. The land had been divided and apportioned by a society which was transplanted holus bolus from Europe.

That transplantation had brought with it, the entire social and economic problems of the time. The only difference was a different land.

The poor were still poor and the rich were still rich. With wealth came prosperity and with nothing came hard work and subservience. What sustained this family was their Lutheran faith, hard grinding toil and strong women.

For the men it was work on the land, for women the endless cooking cleaning and nurturing of children and for young girls of 14 years the duties of maid to the local landowner. What followed was a baby girl and decades of shame attributed to the abused rather than the abuser. The hidden shame of an unwanted child sired as a result of a criminal act.

The power of the wealthy to stigmatise the poor and to control them though control of the local administrative apparatus, dominated by the Council, the Police and the Catholic Church.

The very institutions which were supposed to nurture and support were used by the powerful to subdue, steal and abuse. They were dominated by the powerful, the wealthy, people who make the law and break it in their next breath. With impunity!

This is a story of a woman from a family determined not to be dominated, one who educated herself against all headwinds, a Warrior who struggles still for social and economic justice.

Traffic Offences in South Australia

Traffic offences are the most expiated, and prosecuted of any category of offences in South Australia. Arguably no other area of the law so directly engages the community.

Traffic Offences in South Australia offers a concise and comprehensive account of the law regulating drivers and the driving of motor vehicles.
Its coverage extends from drivers licences and demerit points, to driving offences, including driving whilst disqualified, drink and drug driving, and the more significant Australian Road Rules. On each it identifies the relevant Supreme Court cases and the principles decisive to their resolution. The book also identifies issue of procedure, proof and defence at trial drawn from the author’s substantial practical experience in this area.

Organised by subject topic the book serves both lawyers, police prosecutors and the community. Its easy and readable style is designed to offer ready insight and provide quick answers to those faced with questions in this otherwise complex area of the law.
