This book is a comprehensive account of the history, lifestyle and values of a small Slavey Dene community in the Northwest Territories of Canada. The community is located north of the 60th parallel in the middle of the Deh Cho (Mackenzie River) Valley. It is about the history of the Dene people in attempting to maintain their traditional lifestyle and as much as possible sovereignty over their land. The Dene have a long tradition in the north dating back almost 30,000 years. These traditional people have maintained the integrity of their land by respecting what it has to offer. For the Dene life is part of the land and its maintenance is important for the future. The Dene see the land as providing for their people a spirit which became a way of life.

About the Author

This book has been written by an Australia couple who as adult educators first lived in Pehdzeh Ki family years ago with their young family. It gives an account of the day-to-day experiences of this family as they worked in the community. They learned about sustainability and the traditional knowledge needed for survival in a completely different environment to what their experiences were in Australia. In return they set about helping to develop some of the skills and knowledge needed by the local people to operate in a European system. The community were attempting to achieve this without the loss of their traditional values or dignity while maintaining their Dene language.

A droll memoir of an eventful life.
The author left school aged 14 to pursue a career as a professional square dance caller. Somehow, he found his way back to school and later university. He was diverted and became a jazz club promoter for a few years.

After finally completing his law degree he practised at the bar for nearly 40 years as a barrister and QC and spent 11 years as a judge
of the Family Court of Australia. Subsequently he was appointed a Professorial Fellow at Charles Darwin University and an acting judge of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory.

Together with an old friend the author returned to the music business when aged 60. The Rocker and the Jazzer have written over 50 songs
and their albums are available to stream. Four of their songs have been recorded in Nashville and they have also been covered by German and Dutch bands.

This is not the author’s first excursion into print. He has written two textbooks, internationally circulated articles and two published novels, JERRY O and MONKEY MAN are available in print or as EBooks.

He is presently working on a new novel, when not playing tennis or writing songs.

About the Author

The author has practised as a barrister, QC, judge and Law Professor over a career spanning 50 years. He is also a musician and songwriter. He is the Jazzer in the Rocker & Jazzer band that has recorded a number of albums and he has co-written numerous songs that have been covered in the USA and Europe. He has written a number of published text books and his fiction, REFLECTIONS OF TINY VICTORIES, JERRY O and MONKEY MAN are available in print or as EBooks.

I was fortunate enough to sit on the balcony of a cruise ship for a few days while working on this book. I would often gaze out to sea and contemplate the vastness of the ocean and the braveness and tenacity of the sailors in the early days. They truly were ‘blue water warriors’.

W.E. West : Recollections of a Life in Early Orange

This book is an autobiography but more importantly it is a Social History of the Orange district in the words of one of its residents.

Willie Edwin West (1886-1974) was a well-known resident of Orange during its formative years and was a Canobolas orchardist. Two of his many skills were as a horseman in his younger years and a raconteur in his later years. In the mid-1960s he sat down and recorded reminisces of his life. The tapes laid idle for 55 years and have now been brought back to life. Did all the events recorded take place? Probably! Did all of the conversations take place as recorded? All most certainly not!

W E West had five sons and one daughter: Jim, Russell, Bruce, Brian, Howard and Winifred. As his recollections focused on his adventures there have been two important additions in this book. Firstly, two documents prepared by Winifred in 1999 have been included. There is a brief outline of the family and her recollections of family life in Orange until her marriage in 1945.

The book concludes with an Honour Roll as each of his sons served in various capacities during World War II. Russell and Brian both paid the supreme sacrifice. This section includes details of their war service and a brief history of the units in which they all served.
