The average life-expectancy of an Australian male is 81.5 years. In view of my proximity to that lapidary age, I thought it was time to record those parts of my life as yet unchronicled. These reminiscences are bookended by the 2021 recollections of my wife Jo and myself, who count ourselves fortunate to be based in Adelaide, one of the world’s safest and most liveable cities.

Born in Australia through fortunes of war, Peter Emery spent his formative years in Malaysia and Scotland before embarking on a teaching career, which took him to most countries of the Arab World, culminating in a stint as Visiting Professor of Translation Studies at UAE University, Al-Ain, 2010-2013.

About the Author

Heidi McLeod resides in Adelaide, South Australia with her husband. A teaching career of over 40 years, three daughters and a foster son, a large extended family, many friends, and her grandchildren have nurtured her fascination in the human journey. In her first book, Heidi traces a portion of her grandfather’s life in the style of a novel. I have documented this through humor and a sense of realness, using an abstract analogy borrowed from the animal kingdom to set the tone.

I want this book to enable and encourage people to recognise and experience their own travelling ambitions. It should manifest the urgency to compile itineraries and plan trips that will enable them to discover or rediscover their true selves.

In summary this book is written for all the adventurers and should serve as a reminder that it is never too late to dream. God created this beautiful planet not for us to view from a safe distance but to experience it hands-on, meet new people, see places and make memories.

About the Author

Don Mathewson was Director of Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories of the Australian National University for nine years from 1977.

Since 1955 he was involved in studying the Universe in remote parts of the world from solitary observatories at high altitudes. One of his many discoveries was the Magellanic Stream, a huge arc of hydrogen around our Galaxy pulled from the Magellanic Clouds.

From his dome he would look up at the Magellanic Clouds and wonder if life would exist in this beautiful galaxy. He became so obsessed with this idea he decided to write A Tale of Two Planets.

In 1993, he travelled to Lord Howe Island with his family and immediately fell in love with this World Heritage Island and its stunning array of bird, marine and plant life. They have been regular visitors to the island ever since.

During long walks on the island through this magical world of lush rainforests of kentia palm, blackbutt and pandanus, Don’s imagination was redirected from solving cosmic puzzles to telling the story of The Adventures of Sammy Swamphen of Lord Howe Island.

The Little Book of Rambling Rhymes: A Feast of Aussie Poems

About the Author

 

Fred Hewison is a retired Survey Draughtsman, who was employed by the Sydney Water Board for a period of thirty-eight years.

He was born in the Sydney suburb (now a city) of Hurstville and remained living there for fifty-five years, before he and his wife, Margaret, moved to the seaside town of Copacabana, near Gosford on the New South Wales, Central Coast.

In 1996 they moved with their beautiful dog to the present location of Banora Point; a suburb of Tweed Heads, near the Queensland border.

They have no family, but enjoy the lifestyle and climate of the area in which they live.

 Fred has a passion for writing; one of which is a published autobiography of his early years when growing up, titled “Crossed my Mind.”

He also is a competent landscape artist; a hobby in which he has indulged over many years.

Poetry is a relatively newfound pleasure.
