Whose Life is it Anyway?

Leaving a Violent Abuser

Deborah left Wayne after eighteen years of his violence, taking their children with her.

She thought they were now free from abuse. Not so. This is the sequel to Whose Life Is It Anyway? Recognising and Surviving Domestic Violence.

Deborah looks closely at the pitfalls of Family Law court as experienced by an abused parent, while attempting to keep her children safe from harm.

It is a story that will resonate with every parent engaging in a fight for the rights of children.

Does the Family court act ‘in the best interests’ of the child? You be the judge.

Deborah Thomson, self-published author of Whose Life is it Anyway? Leaving a Violent Abuser

About the Author

Deborah Thomson, with her daughter, moved to Tasmania in 2010. She now lives here with her partner of nine years and a parrot.

Deborah escaped domestic violence and, inspired by her now partner, she wrote her first book Whose Life Is It Anyway? Recognising and Surviving Domestic Violence to help others recognise abuse (in particular coercive control) in the home and to increase their motivation to leave earlier.

After publishing her first book, Deborah became a trained advocate through Engender Equality, for survivors of family violence. As part of the advocacy, she speaks at domestic violence events across Tasmania, through media channels and podcasts. Link to an example of her advocacy work Choking, non-fatal strangulation to become standalone offence in Tasmania under planned law – ABC News

Deborah has recently completed her second book, a follow up to the first which detailed lived experience with domestic violence by her then-husband; spanning seventeen years from 1985 to 2003. This book is now used in Tasmania as an information resource for family violence counsellors and students on practicals.

The new book, soon to be published, is the final chapter in Deborah’s life with a perpetrator of family violence. Whose Life Is It Anyway? Leaving a Violent Abuser is a complex yet engaging depiction of her personal journey as a parent in a custodial battle with an abusive husband, and father of their children.  It is a story that will resonate with every parent engaging in a fight for the rights of children to feel safe and free from harm…

In her spare time, Deborah writes regularly for Forty South magazine, in the column entitled Tasmanian Voices Deborah Thomson The Family Violence Epidemic.

EBOOK

This book is for anyone who has ever felt trapped, stuck, given away their power, suffers from low self-esteem, or finds it hard to say no.

It is the story of the Author’s life-long search for love and acceptance in all the wrong places, joining a religious cult at age the age of fifteen, followed by two abusive relationships. However through all of this she eventually came to realise that the cage she was imprisoned in was one of her own construction. The good news was that she alone held the keys to her freedom. Her story points the way out of the traps of cycles of abuse, victimhood, destructive habits and thought patterns inherent in so many people who just want to be loved and accepted.

The reader is taken on a journey of self-discovery so they can free their own inner tiger, identifying their self-imposed cage and the bars that keep them imprisoned, such as:

  • COMPLACENCY AND APATHY
  • THE CYCLE OF ABUSE AND VICTIMHOOD
  • DESTRUCTIVE HABITS AND THOUGHT PATTERNS
  • ADDICTIONS
  • CO-DEPENDENCY AND ENABLING
  • DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY
  • LOW SELF-ESTEEM AND SELF-DOUBT
  • FEAR

About the Author

Christina (not her real name) is a typical Australian woman, raised by loving, middle-class Christian parents, however her story is anything but typical. Despite her Christian upbringing, her longing for a deeper spiritual connection and unconditional love caused her to make questionable life decisions throughout her search.

My reason for writing this book is not for self-promotion or money, but hopefully to empower other women (and men) who want to free themselves as I did. I just wish I had read something like this when I was young… I would have made very different decisions!

A book of Survival and Freedom

COMING SOON

In this little volume, Friend draws on his courage and talks about a grim father-son relationship, sexuality, differences and the dangers of trying to conform, religion and nervous breakdowns – all difficult topics, and set in a very different time from now.

“My mission,” he says, “is to share my experiences, in the hope I can save others from the pitfalls.”

Norris Friend tells his story with honesty, respect, gentleness and care, at times with reverence, and never with anger or from ego. He knows the pain of emotional abuse and worse, but he stands back from the memories to stress that forgiveness is paramount. He shares very private and painful experiences with no talk of redress or vengeance, no seeking of sympathy, but the aim of offering insight, because he has learned that healing occurs if you understand why things happened.

Simple, honest and brief, this book is so much more accessible and refreshing than long-winded self-help manuals. For me, the insights it offers are spot on. – Lisa Lark, editor
