The Silent Witness To The Events And People Of Birdwood

Blumberg Hill is the fourth in a projected series of seven books focussing on some South Australians – why they came, what they and their descendants did, and why the State is better for their achievements.

Author Richard Maerschel’s aim is to shine a light onto several unknowns, to propose answers to some hard questions, and to correct a few misconceptions.

His subjects are mainly 19th century German-speaking migrants, their relations with Anglo-Saxons and Irish, and rural transport and communications. For this series so far Richard has written over 800 pages with hundreds of references, photos and maps.

Transforming Lives Book Cover

About The Author

BERNIE O’LEARY HAS had an amazing and awe-inspiring journey, over the last 10 years, running Alpha in Western Australian Prisons.

The Lord specifically led him into this ministry, after a 42 year career as a Civil and Water Engineer, with nothing to do with Prisons in his life! Bernie is the Alpha Prisons Ambassador – Western Australia, with Alpha Australia.

He has seen about 540 prisoners doing Alpha in WA, so far (at 2024), and seen many prisoners coming to the Lord, and being transformed.

This book has also shown the results of some overseas initiatives, in major focuses on spiritual transformation and rehabilitation, rather than only a custodial focus.

These have shown huge reductions in number of prisoners, and recidivism rates.

He has said that this whole journey continues to be an incredible adventure, with huge eternal impacts!

George

George tells the life story of George T Tilston, who experienced his fair share of trouble and sorrow in his first threescore and ten years: two world wars, a great depression and a deep recession to name a few.

On the verge of reaching his seventieth birthday he did ‘fly away’ – not off the perch exactly, but off to Perth in Western Australia – propelled by the love for his family and the promise of a new beginning.

A new life in the Colony of Victoria

Four brothers and a sister emigrated from Ireland to the Colony of Victoria between 1853 and 1858. They came as part of the gold rush, but not because of the lure of gold. They came to farm the new pastoral and agricultural estates. Life in Northern Ireland
during the early 19th Century, provided limited opportunities for families. After years of hard work as agricultural labourers on the large estates of the far-off colony, they became successful landowners. Their children were born as first-generation Victorians who
continued in the traditional trades. However, some embarked on new careers as novel opportunities became available after Federation.

About the Author

Barry J Conn is a fourth generation Australian who grew up on a wheat and sheep farm at Wail, in the Wimmera district of western Victoria. He was briefly a mathematics and science secondary school teacher at the Horsham High School before becoming a botanist employed in Bulolo and Lae, Papua New Guinea, and then Melbourne and Sydney, Australia. He published many scientific papers, including the ‘Trees of Papua New Guinea’ (three volumes) and one children’s book, ‘My brother Neville is a pest.’ He retired as Principal Research Scientist from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney in 2015 and, together with his wife, now lives in rural Victoria.

Love & Light

A story about never giving up

Growing is part of life’s journey.

We change, we learn, and we evolve until we become who we are meant to be. The little seed in this story represents each one of us, and is a gentle reminder to embrace all the different seasons of life. The little seed is learning about patience, perseverance, trusting the process – and most importantly, to never give up.

Note from the Author

There are hidden meanings and lessons in your life and healing has a beautiful way of discovering them. Things might not always make sense or be fair, and at times something can be very painful. But if we trace our life backwards, we always find our way home, back to ourselves, back to love and back to the light within us.

Through my own healing journey, I gained some incredible insights which invoked a sense of creativity within me. I found inspiration in the intertwined lessons of life and nature.

Nature grounds us, inviting reflection and connection. For children, it serves as a gentle reminder of the Love surrounding them, offering solace in moments of feeling lost and an opportunity to tap into their inner Light. The Light is the unseen guiding force, it brings hope, clarity and intuition.

Through storytelling, I aim to shed light on these themes, showcasing how nature nurtures the heart and the importance of planting the seed of what Love & Light could represent in the impressionable minds of the young people who will shape the future.

My hope is that this story reaches into your heart and your home. May we all discover the power of healing, creating, and never giving up.
