THROUGH PADDYFIELD AND MINEFIELD

My Teenage Years in Khmer Rouge Cambodia

WITNESS THE UNTHINKABLE

THROUGH PADDYFIELD AND MINEFIELD is a powerful memoir of survival, loss and resilience in the shadow of Cambodia’s darkest years under the brutal regime of the Khmer Rouge.

From the harsh realities of famine to life in the work camps, and the haunting tragedy of the Ghost Mountain minefields, the author shares an unflinching story few dared to tell.

Told with honesty and courage, this memoir blends detailed personal memories with witnessed observations to history, shedding light on long-suppressed events and experiences rarely spoken of. This is more than a record of suffering, it is a testament to human endurance and the will to survive.

Through Paddyfield and Minefield invites readers into a world where every step carried danger and where even remembering the past is a bold act of defiance.

Substitution Effect

The Art of Intentional Choices with Your Time

Most leaders assume their people just don’t work hard enough. Wrong. The real problem is purpose. When teams struggle to connect today’s work to tomorrow’s success, they often pursue quick wins. They trade real progress for shortlived satisfaction.

The result? Busywork. Burnout. And no real progress.

In Substitution Effect, Philip Daniels reveals why your past productivity hacks failed. Our brains prefer quick rewards over long-term benefits. This bias, known as hyperbolic discounting, is holding your company back.

But you can flip it. Philip demonstrates how reflection and mindful decision-making enable employees to recognise when they’re settling. This way, they can shift their focus to what truly matters.

This isn’t another “work harder” playbook. It’s a reset button for how work actually works. You’ll learn to build systems that fit human psychology. You’ll create habits that last under pressure. Plus, you’ll develop teams that seek meaning, not just empty metrics

AI is reshaping work. Winning companies will solve the Substitution Effect. They’ll help their people trade comfort for impact.

Stop asking if your team should work harder. Start helping them stop settling for less.

It’s A Big Paddock

Diary Of A Pack Camel

Camels have been employed on numerous journeys of exploration across the Australian inland. We have, of course, never heard the point of view of one of these powerful beasts of burden.
Now, Dean Koopman has granted a voice to Shabby, the singleminded lead camel on Koopman’s extraordinary 2004 one-man, three-camel expedition from Broome across the Great Sandy Desert to Alice Springs and on to South Australia’s Spencer Gulf.

Shabby turns out to be an astute observer of the ageless beauty of the inland, its perils and its lonely heart breaks, where time is measured only in the plodding spaces between camps – 181 of them.

He is also a droll and affectionate humourist concerning his human companion, Koopman, known to Shabby as “the greenhorn”, who protects his team from attacks by wild bull camels, sews them up when the track turns close to deadly and keeps them fed and watered across thousands of tough kilometres.

Dean Koopman has given us a unique and unforgettable new voice in the great Australian story. Shabby: a bush philosopher for the ages. You’ll fall in love.

About the Author

Harmony Clark

Harmony has been using poetry to express thoughts and observations, dreams, and emotions, since the age of fourteen. Her writing had always been very private, with only a piece here and there being shared with a select audience. After a couple of decades of creative drought, a resurgence of writing mojo finally occurred. More and more instances of sharing gained very positive feedback as readers felt moved and connected to what they read, and that feedback resulted in a desire for Harmony to set her work free. At times joyful, wistful, or romantic, at others darker and angry, Harmony rides the roller coaster of life as we all do. She tries to soften its harder edges with meditation, Yoga, and Qi Gong and finds joy, wonder, and inspiration in nature. She is learning to paint and hopes to one day incorporate her words with art. She chooses to write under the name of Harmony Clark, not for anonymity, but because it is a truer representation of self. Clark is the surname given at birth, rather than that chosen with marriage. Harmony is more esoteric.
