Blumberg Hill

The Silent Witness To The Events And People Of Birdwood

Blumberg Hill is the fourth in a projected series of seven books focussing on some South Australians – why they came, what they and their descendants did, and why the State is better for their achievements.

Author Richard Maerschel’s aim is to shine a light onto several unknowns, to propose answers to some hard questions, and to correct a few misconceptions.

His subjects are mainly 19th century German-speaking migrants, their relations with Anglo-Saxons and Irish, and rural transport and communications. For this series so far Richard has written over 800 pages with hundreds of references, photos and maps.

How the Rich get richer while the Poor stay poor

A philosophical deconstruction of the Australian taxation system and its principles

Our Australian taxation system is an impressive clockwork-like machine with its origins in pre-Victorian times; designed on pre-Victorian principles and with pre-Victorian efficiency. Its workings today, even though falling far short of what is needed in this electronic age, are kept in working order at great expense to the Australian Community.

The author for 34 years was just a worker in Maintenance tasked with keeping everything running as previously. All his pleadings for updating and improving existing plant and functions were met with a glazed silence and just ignored. Instead he made notes of his observations and described in detail the issues causing concern and how a particular function might be made to work more efficiently or, in many cases, retired from service.

This book might easily be taken for a report by a Royal Commission set up for the purpose of looking into and reporting on its inequity, its inefficiency and its complexity. But such Royal Commissions and enquires were held and even examined the issues just mentioned but were unable to formulate the findings and recommendations our author makes in this book.

Turning Points

Changing the direction of your life to be resilient.

Everyone has challenges in their life, this is part of a normal life. Resilience is the ability to experience
these challenges and keep living a good life. It is not having a perfect life, it is more not getting derailed by the challenges and stuck in them.

Resilience is often marketed as a bunch of strategies like mindfulness, self-care, gratitude, and ‘boom’ you are resilient. These approaches generally don’t work. That is because they don’t address the problems in your life and they don’t give you a reason to do the work. They don’t answer questions like: Why should I engage in healthy relationships or mindfulness? Why should I forgive someone? Why am I so angry? A self-care walk is lovely to do, but you have to understand why you are going on the walk and do something about that.

This book will help you to understand your challenging experiences, and why some have impacted you and others have not. You will see why you set poor boundaries, give up on things too easily, or have conflict in relationships. It will also help you to develop better coping skills – embracing both your emotions and your practical side to work though challenges. Most importantly, this book will help you to redefine your worth. When you understand your value, you will work to change what is not working in your life.

Once you make different choices, you will experience a turning point. This is when you turn away from the current path you are on and start to travel on a more helpful one. These turning points aren’t always large changes, but they are enough to help you to live a resilient life. I hope through reading this book you experience your own turning points, and that you get to live the life you want. Life can throw some big challenges, but if you know how to manage them you can be resilient.
