From Here They Marched

THE MITCHAM AIF CAMP, LOCATED IN WHAT IS NOW THE ADELAIDE SUBURB OF COLONEL LIGHT GARDENS, WAS THE TRAINING GROUND FOR THOUSANDS OF SOUTH AUSTRALIAN VOLUNTEERS WHO ENLISTED TO FIGHT FOR THE AIF IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR.

The camp, opened in bare paddocks in early 1915 after earlier camps had proved inadequate, overcame significant early difficulties to become what was proudly claimed to be ‘the model camp for the Commonwealth’.

From Here They Marched tells the story of the camp and how men from all walks of civilian life were brought together and prepared for the discipline of military life and for war.

It shows how the military authorities approached the task of also meeting the physical and social needs of as many as 4400 men at a time, all newly away from their home and families, and facing an uncertain future.

The surviving memories of those who passed through the camp, newspaper reports, the few remaining documents from the camp, and contemporary photographs are used to bring this vibrant, ever changing community of men to life.

The part played by other military training camps in and near Adelaide which were used for short periods during the war is also described. This includes the Morphettville and Ascot Park/Oaklands camps where the men of the earliest contingents did their training before taking part in the landings at Gallipoli.

Mitcham camp is an important part of the historic landscape of Adelaide, and the final chapter presents a case for the preservation of the memory of the camp in Colonel Light Gardens.

Photos & Memories 1950s

For All Those Who Can Remember

A nostalgic journey through the years that helped build a nation’s identity.

Come back with me into a most remarkable decade in Australia – the 1950s. Photos & Memories 1950s: For All Those Who Can Remember captures the stories, pictures and memories of an era that shaped a nation, from the end of wartime rationing to the arrival of television, from the dream of a quarter-acre block to the birth of teenage culture.

This isn’t just the history of our nation, it’s the story of everyday Australians rebuilding their lives after World War II. Tales of how families embraced new suburbs, welcomed European immigrants, and celebrated together during the Queen’s visit and the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

If you were born or lived through the fifties, this book explores the milestones that defined a generation – first jobs, first cars, first homes, and the simple pleasures of backyard cricket and visits to the corner shop. For seniors, these pages will spark cherished memories; for younger readers, it’s a window into the decade that helped create a modern Australia.

Becoming Me, Annie Richards the flower hunter

Annie so often described her life as ‘fearful’ and yet it is evident that she enjoyed a remarkable first success as a flower hunter and later an astonishing development as a ‘would be naturalist.’ With determination and persistence, she became one of the most prolific flower collectors for two scientific gentlemen – Baron von Mueller of Melbourne and Professor Tate of The University of Adelaide. Living in a lonely and isolated part of South Australia, she became, by chance, a trailblazer for what would eventually be called the ‘New Woman’.

This too is a tragic story of neglect and hardship; it dogged her desire to be a Victorian ‘lady’ and to be recognised as one of the famous flower hunters of the nineteenth century. Despite all her difficulties and disappointments she was to collect plant specimens for 20 years. Neglected and forgotten, Annie Richards was to triumph in most surprising ways. This account reveals her rightful place in the pantheon of Victorian women who broke the expected role of subservience. Annie’s life, 1845-1930, brings into sharp focus the plight of contemporary women who were bold and fearless, but unfulfilled intellectually.

Roger Cross has written this story out of a deep love of the Australian bush, especially the much maligned Mallee of Southern Australia. It was in the Mallee that Annie found herself and achieved so much. He feels saddened by the neglect shown to her by Baron von Mueller and is thankful to Professor Ralph Tate for recognising her worth, rescuing her dignity and her self-esteem.

Celebrating 78 Years of Manufacturing

This book is dedicated in appreciation to everyone who has ever worked at Toyoda Gosei Australia, Bridgestone Australia, Uniroyal and SA Rubber Mills. It contains images and information on these organisations between 1939 and 2017.

In 1939 Mark R. Lodge and Harold D.Hill purchased a small rubber manufacturing business from Kenny Charlesworth Rubber Pty Ltd located in a small building on the corner of Furness Avenue and South Road at Edwardstown in South Australia. Edwardstown was a lightly developed suburb 8kms from the city centre on route to the rich agricultural regions south of the city.

This purchase was the beginning of an empire that would span over 80 years.
