SA Greats

South Australians are lucky.

They have not only a temperate climate but a government, developed from the principles of the Enlightenment, which encourages innovation and social progress. The lead South Australians have given the world in agriculture, science and social advancement can, in part, be attributed to the women and men described in this volume and to the system set up by Wakefield and his team in London in 1835. The culture espoused by such people as Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill reached a long way!

RB Smith’s invention of the Stumpjump Plough, Lawrence Bragg’s discoveries which eventually found the structure of DNA and Mary Lee’s world-first embraced innovation and social reform. Perhaps the greatest gift to humanity though was Howard Florey’s development of penicillin. These people and others are saluted in this book.

Their contributions do not appear to be diminishing. Terry Tao’s recent solutions to many different longstanding mathematical problems and the installation of the world’s biggest battery in South Australia in 2019 suggest we are not faltering, but there is a long way to go.

Shedding Light

A history of St. Columb’s Anglican Church, Hawthorn through its stained glass windows

Shedding Light explores the rich history of St. Columb’s Anglican Church, Hawthorn, using its beautiful stained-glass windows as a point of reference. With more than 150 illustrations, it celebrates the artistry of some of Melbourne’s most gifted stained-glass creators, and remembers the lives of the parishioners to whom those windows are dedicated. Drawing extensively upon church records and newspaper reports across 140 years, it provides a careful historical examination of the significant influence and ministry of this local church. The meaning of the symbols and stories contained in the windows are analysed and explained, shedding light on the gospel message.

The Rev. Malcolm Woolrich is an Anglican priest and lawyer. Since 2013, he has served as a chaplain at Melbourne Grammar School, Wadhurst. For the last decade, he has been a member of the Peter MacCallum Hospital Ethics Committee, as well as a member and chair of Anglicare Victoria’s Ethics Committee. Together with his wife Karina and three daughters, he has worshipped at St. Columb’s, Hawthorn for over 30 years.

Testimonials

“With its imposing and longstanding presence in Hawthorn, St Columb’s is a worthy local history subject. However, Shedding Light is anything but merely parochial. Malcolm Woolrich takes us on a journey that includes everything from the British empire, architecture and aesthetics to church politics, biblical story and personal anecdote, even throwing in some occasional scandal and controversy. A rollicking read, from a true polymath, I highly recommend this beautifully produced volume.”

Brian Rosner
Principal, Ridley College

“This book is an important addition to the understanding of the connection of a local church to the people and social movements which shaped both the Hawthorn and wider Melbourne communities from the late nineteenth century.”

Hunstanton, Kings Lynn and West Norfolk

The W. E. Daw Collection

Cliff has many warm memories of visiting his grandmother’s house in Walton-on-the-Naze while growing up. There, he spent many hours exploring boxes of photographs, old postcards, glass plates, sketches, and tinkering with old photography equipment.

He later learned that these items were part of his great-great grandfather’s collection, William Edward Daw (W. E. Daw), who played a key role in the rise of amateur photography in King’s Lynn. William Edward Daw worked to capture the scenic coastline of West Norfolk, particularly the areas around Hunstanton, with its sandy beaches, cliffs, and charming villages.

Through this wonderful collection of personal photographs, postcards, and sketches, Cliff is proud to be able to bring you this unique book which celebrates the history of the region.
