Power House & Mary Kathleen

The challenges and experiences which shaped my life.

My first book ‘Black Tea & Hay Dust’ was published in 2008 and represented the formative years of my life from age 3 to 18 years. Foreshadowed in this book two more books were proposed to complete a trilogy of my life up to and including retirement. However I have now decided to combine the second book ‘Power House’ with the third book ‘Mary Kathleen’ in a single book titled ‘Power House and Mary Kathleen’. This book covers the remainder of my life up to retirement and is divided into two parts:

Part 1 covers the period when I left home to continue my education in the city of Melbourne where I completed a Civil Engineering Diploma, courted, married and began a family life and a working career.

Part 2 covers my working career which initially was very difficult but blossomed later after a lucky break sent my family and me to far North West Queensland to a place called Mary Kathleen. This move changed our lives forever with some very big consequences.

About the Author

Terry Cunningham grew up on a dairy farm and later graduated in civil engineering at Swinburne College in Hawthorn, Melbourne. His career spanned 45 years where he spent time working throughout Australia and overseas in the Middle East, Montreal, Borneo, New Guinea, New Caledonia and Guinea. His autobiography covers an intriguing career with lifetime experiences including all the dramas, fears, hopes, disappointments, joys and achievements along the way. The anecdotes and life episodes are many and varied, making this autobiography a real ‘page turner’.

Terry retired in 2013 at age 67. Together with wife Christina he experienced cruises to the Nordic countries and Asia, also visiting China and the UK. His main hobbies include writing, pencil sketching and gardening.

Just Right for You

(CHINESE AND SPANISH VERSION AVAILABLE SOON)

From the moment you began to grow, I knew that you would be just right…

Children’s picture book Just Right for You offers a warm, optimistic way of introducing Autism to your child and embracing their differences.

Written by Reframing Autism founder and CEO Melanie Heyworth and with the brightly coloured, heartwarming illustrations of I am Cadence, the book’s Autistic creators bring a depth of insight through lived experience and passion to this work.

About the Creators

Melanie Heyworth is an Autistic mother of three Autistic children. She has postgraduate qualifications in Autism. Mel is passionate about creating a better world for herself, her children, and the Autistic community.

Mel founded Reframing Autism in 2017 and has been running it ever since. Through Reframing Autism Mel wants to bring parents of Autistic children to a more accepting, optimistic and hopeful way of parenting. She firmly believes that social change can only occur when Autistic individuals are supported to explore and celebrate their authentic Autistic identities.

I am Cadence celebrates the strengths of Autistic neurology and neurodiversity, taking its name from twelve-year-old Cadence – an active, playful and bright Autistic girl. Cadence delights in writing, twirling, patterns, counting and creating. She has a great love for animals, being outdoors and socialising with her friends.

Her first published piece, ‘Autism is why I am different’, at just seven years of age, was made into the Spanish short film Acceptance (released 2016). She has since authored various short pieces describing her experiences of being an Autistic child.

In 2019 I am Cadence produced the short documentary Bouncing Words in collaboration with Reframing Autism. The documentary explores language development and communication in Autistic children who are non-speaking.

Dave Loew was born in Kenya close by the wilds of the Serengeti Plains. His parents were Hungarian and English.

He began playing the cello at six years of age, and early lessons with the visiting international virtuoso cellist Raya Garbousova greatly inspired the young boy to ‘live the dream’ and become a fine cellist himself.

Dave Loew’s career has taken him on numerous musical journeys around the globe and on to London, where he joined the illustrious London Symphony Orchestra under André Previn and other ensembles, as well as playing for countless stars in the entertainment world. An early breakthrough into the cream of London`s elite commercial recording session camps saw him playing for such iconic artists as Julie Andrews, Barbra Streisand, Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman and Elaine Page, film composers John Williams, Henry Mancini and Jerry Goldsmith, as well as such pop legends as Mike Oldfi eld, Cliff Richard, Leo Sayer, Sting and David Essex, and the great divas Luciano Pavarotti, Joan Sutherland and Montserrat Caballe.
