Camels have been employed on numerous journeys of exploration across the Australian inland. We have, of course, never heard the point of view of one of these powerful beasts of burden.
Now, Dean Koopman has granted a voice to Shabby, the singleminded lead camel on Koopman’s extraordinary 2004 one-man, three-camel expedition from Broome across the Great Sandy Desert to Alice Springs and on to South Australia’s Spencer Gulf.
Shabby turns out to be an astute observer of the ageless beauty of the inland, its perils and its lonely heart breaks, where time is measured only in the plodding spaces between camps – 181 of them.
He is also a droll and affectionate humourist concerning his human companion, Koopman, known to Shabby as “the greenhorn”, who protects his team from attacks by wild bull camels, sews them up when the track turns close to deadly and keeps them fed and watered across thousands of tough kilometres.
Dean Koopman has given us a unique and unforgettable new voice in the great Australian story. Shabby: a bush philosopher for the ages. You’ll fall in love.

Her name and magic are synonymous with legends. Why? Because Alexa Star was the galaxy’s hero.
When the prince asks her to come to the palace, she doesn’t know what to expect. He’s been her best friend for twenty years and is next in line for the throne. So, there’s nothing he could say that would scare her. Right? Wrong.
He admits that he is petrified of his crown and urges her to become his regent. Since helping people is what she does, she has a hard time telling him no.
All he ever coveted was her, and now he’s getting her. To rule beside him, then perhaps, to call his own. Things are finally falling into place for Eugene.
That is until his father finds out about Alexa’s new role. The image of her sitting in a position of power has him seeing red.
Can the hearts of two best friends withstand the fear, love and shadows of a looming crown?
UNTIL THE STARS CLAIM US……IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
About the Author
AUTUMN FOX lives in Australia with her husband, who actively feeds her ever-growing TBR. Which is ironic, because as a kid, you couldn’t have paid her to read. Pick up a book? No, thank you.
She’s an avid fantasy and romantasy reader, dabbling in rom coms at the moment. Mushrooms (fake ones), fairy-sized homes and some dust adorn her bookshelves. I know it’s gross. I’ll tell her.
Wear your wings with pride, read what you want without judgement, and live vicariously through your imagination. Autumn says it’s okay.

The Ballad of Jimmy O’Reilly
It’s hard to make believe every day. I’m thinking about that a lot today. I suppose turning 100 will do that to a man.
But I have a secret, an inspiration, a guiding hand, and it’s been with me since the tragedy that fell across my path when I was 12 years old. It has always been there, like a person behind a sheer curtain blowing in the wind, never distinct and always on the verge of disappearing.
It’s a story that has shaped my being, who I am, who I believe I am at least, and has given me the confidence to try, and the strength to carry on, when the path seemed lost. It is a story of reality, a story that proves that we don’t see the world as it is, we see it as we are.
Perhaps it’s time to tell that story …
