We Sweep the Streets

A police story based on fact

Ivor John Carroll—later to become known as ‘Chris’ short for ‘Xmas Carroll’ but affectionately called ‘Xmas’ by those that knew him well—a self-confessed ratbag—takes us on a sometimes comical and at times emotional journey through what it was to be a ‘copper’ during the 1940-50s.

The array of fascinating characters with whom he worked—some loved, some hated—the continually changing states of ‘the job’, and the many and varied ‘cases’ on which he worked, are related in a frank, politically incorrect and unfiltered manner—he pulls no punches.

These stories would almost certainly have been lost to time had Xmas’ youngest daughter, Vicki, not decided to dust off the hand-typed, yellowing, faded pages (remember typewriters?)—and retype, reformat, edit, and have published these intriguing, true telling’s of a hard but honest man. It could not have been done without the support and help of her husband, Tony, and his capable literary skills. It was a labour of love and a tribute to her father.

These stories are an important part of a legacy that Chris had always wanted to leave to his family—bringing these pages into the light have made that dream a reality.

We Sweep the Streets: A Police Story Based on Fact is the first in what was to be a duology, spanning IJ Carroll’s entire career. However, searches to date have yet to uncover a complete copy of the second manuscript… But the search continues.

The Spirit of Pehdzeh Ki

Maintaining a sustainable lifestyle and following traditional values in the face of a barrage of mining and Canadian business interests is quite a challenge.

This book is a comprehensive account of the history, lifestyle and values of a small Slavey Dene community in the Northwest Territories of Canada. The community is located north of the 60th parallel in the middle of the Deh Cho (Mackenzie River) Valley. It is about the history of the Dene people in attempting to maintain their traditional lifestyle and as much as possible sovereignty over their land. The Dene have a long tradition in the north dating back almost 30,000 years. These traditional people have maintained the integrity of their land by respecting what it has to offer. For the Dene life is part of the land and its maintenance is important for the future. The Dene see the land as providing for their people a spirit which became a way of life.

About the Author

This book has been written by an Australia couple who as adult educators first lived in Pehdzeh Ki family years ago with their young family. It gives an account of the day-to-day experiences of this family as they worked in the community. They learned about sustainability and the traditional knowledge needed for survival in a completely different environment to what their experiences were in Australia. In return they set about helping to develop some of the skills and knowledge needed by the local people to operate in a European system. The community were attempting to achieve this without the loss of their traditional values or dignity while maintaining their Dene language.

Fact, Conjecture, Speculation

and the Unsolved Murders of Marianne Schmidt and Christine Sharrock

On 11 January 1965, 15-year-old best friends, Marianne Schmidt and Christine Sharrock were overwhelmed and slaughtered in the sandhills behind Sydney’s Wanda Beach. Not only had the killer struck in a public area and during the summer school holiday break, but he’d done it in broad daylight. Despite the brazenness of the act, several police investigations and their ostensibly ongoing inquiries have failed to bring the killer to justice.

Why did Marianne and Christine walk into the sandhills that ill-fated day? Why were they killed? How did their killer, who was almost certainly blood soaked, leave the area unseen? Why have the various police investigations failed to identify the killer? Were Marianne and Christine early victims of a ‘True Crime Anti-Hero’ like the vile Derek Percy, or the sadistic Christopher Wilder? Were they victims of a sexual assault gone awry, or were they the ‘gateway’ victims of a short-lived ‘ripper-esque’ killing spree in the Sydney-Wollongong corridor?

In a search for the truth about the Wanda outrage, these vexed questions are examined through the lenses of fact, conjecture and speculation.

About the Author

John Bicknell is a licensed private investigator. He does not like questions without answers, but is learning to live with them.

Blue Water Warriors

Blue Water Warriors tells the story to the early Sydney to Hobart yacht races. Drawing on log books and memories of the navigator on a legendary competing yacht, a living part of Australia’s maritime history.

The Mistral II’s crew encountered dangers and hazards not generally faced by today’s competitors, without life rafts, radios and no propeller that was deliberately removed. At one point there were death-defying moments where Mistral II came terrifyingly close to being smashed against the tremendous cliffs of Tasman Island.

Blue Water Warriors chronicles the fierce rivalry between Mistral II and Morna, at that time the most famous yachts in Australia, and tells of more relaxed times on the return voyages to Sydney

The KGB’s Genius of Illusion

The space race started just after World War 11. It was to be an epic battle between the Soviet Union and the United States of America. World dominance and superiority was the coveted prize.
Espionage was rife.

Soviet Dimitri Azorov infiltrated into the USA. He mingled into society and influential circles with high success whilst despatching vital information on metallurgy.

Simultaneously a disgruntled former Japanese soldier attempts to sabotage several metal foundries producing exotic alloys for rocket components.

About the Author

I have learned so much about this race, the yachts and the people of the era and for that I am better educated and wiser. I hope some of this rubs off onto you, the reader.

I was fortunate enough to sit on the balcony of a cruise ship for a few days while working on this book. I would often gaze out to sea and contemplate the vastness of the ocean and the braveness and tenacity of the sailors in the early days. They truly were ‘blue water warriors’.
